San Antonio, Texas is dubbed “Military City, USA” because it has one of the nation’s largest active and retired military populations. San Antonio, is home to Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA), a United States military facility located in San Antonio, Texas.The facility is under the jurisdiction of the United States Air Force 502d Air Base Wing, Air Education and Training Command (AETC).
Encompassing JBSA are three separate installations Fort Sam Houston, Lackland Air Force Base (AFB) and Randolph Air Force Base (AFB). It’s also home to the Department of Defense’s largest medical center at Joint Base San Antonio Fort Sam Houston. Joint Base San Antonio supports a population of 80,000 and supports students at three installations annually of up to 138,000.
Joint Base San Antonio Fort Sam Houston
Fort Sam Houston was founded in 1845, and named for General Sam Houston, hero of the battle of San Jacinto and first president of the Republic of Texas. Fort Sam Houston is unique among Army posts. On one hand, it is a major, active military installation and plays a vital role in the defense of the United States. On the other hand, it contains some of the oldest structures on any Army installation.
Joint Base San Antonio Lackland Air Force Base
Lackland AFB is the Air Force’s only site for enlisted basic military training for all non-prior service Airmen of the regular Air Force, Air National Guard, and Air Force Reserve. Lackland also offers professional and technical skills training and provides students from 117 countries the opportunity to increase their proficiency in the English language through its Defense Language Institute English Language Center.
Joint Base San Antonio Randolph Air Force Base
Randolph AFB serves as headquarters of the Air Education and Training Command (AETC) as well as the Air Force Personnel Center (AFPC) and is known as “the Showplace of the Air Force” because of the Spanish Colonial Revival Style architecture in which all structures including hangars were constructed.
USO San Antonio
USO San Antonio provides outreach services to active duty and retired military personnel and their families. Friendly staff members and volunteers are ready to assist you with information about lodging, transportation, special events, local attractions, and more. There are three San Antonio locations: downtown, MEPS and at the airport. The Downtown Community Center provides a comfortable home away from home for military members and their families to relax and enjoy themselves just steps away from the historic River Walk. The MEPS USO is on Ft. Sam Houston. The San Antonio International Airport USO is in Terminal 2 just outside security.
