Three major roadways provide access to the fort, including Loop 410, Interstate 35 and U.S. 281. Fort Sam Houston is San Antonio’s oldest military base, it was founded in 1845, and named for General Sam Houston, hero of the battle of San Jacinto and first president of the Republic of Texas; known locally as “Fort Sam.”
Fort Sam Houston is home to the Fifth U.S. Army, U.S. Army South, Fifth Recruiting Brigade, 12th ROTC Brigade, U.S. Navy Regional Recruiting, the San Antonio Military Entrance and Processing Station and the U.S. Naval School of Health Sciences, Bethesda Detachment. It was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1975. As one of the Army’s oldest installations and now part of Joint Base San Antonio, Fort Sam Houston boasts the largest collection of historic structures — more than 900 buildings. Even more consequential than the numbers is the historical integrity of the post’s different sections which represent different eras of construction. Careful preservation of these areas, along with two museums, allows the post to live with its history, surrounded by existence of the traditions of excellence established when the first soldier arrived here in 1845.
On October 1, 2010, Fort Sam Houston joined Lackland and Randolph Air Force Bases to create Joint Base San Antonio, under Air Force administration.
